Anguilla is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. It is one of the northernmost of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, located east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and immediately north of Saint Martin. The territory consists of the main island of Anguilla, approximately 16 miles (26 kilometers) long and 3 miles (5 km) wide at its widest point, as well as a number of much smaller islands and reefs with no permanent population. The capital of the territory is the Valley. The total land area is 35 square miles (91 km2), with a population of approximately 14,731 (2018).
The name Anguilla comes from the Italian Anguilla, which means "eel" (in turn from the Latin Anguilla, diminutive of anguis, snake) due to the shape of the island. The discovery and renaming of the island by Europeans remains uncertain. Some claim that Columbus noticed him; others attribute it to the French explorer Rene Gulen de Laudoniere during his travels in 1564 and 1565. The Dutch West India Company built a fort on the island in 1631. The Dutch retreated after the destruction of the fort by Spanish troops in 1633. he is also known as Serpentine or Serpentine Island.
