Info about United Arab Emirates (History)

United Arab Emirates is a Western Asian country located on the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders Oman and Saudi Arabia, and the Persian Gulf has a maritime boundary between Qatar and Iran.

The United Arab Emirates is a selective monarchy formed from seven Emirates consisting of Abu Dhabi (where the federal capital Abu Dhabi is located), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Khaimah Wine. Each emirate is governed by Sheikh and together forms the Federal Supreme Council. One of them is President of the United Arab Emirates. In 2013, the UAE had a population of 9.2 million, of which 1.4 million were Emirati citizens and 7.8 million were expatriates. The estimated population in 2020 was 9.89 million.

Islam is the state religion and Arabic is the official language. United Arab Emirates has the sixth and seventh largest oil and gas reserves in the world, respectively. Abu Dhabi's ruler and the country's first president, Zayed bin Sultan Arnahan, oversaw the development of the Emirates by investing oil revenues in health care, education and infrastructure. The economy of the United Arab Emirates is the most diversified of all members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and Dubai, the most populous city, is a global city and an international hub. The country is less dependent on oil and gas and is economically focused on tourism and business. The UAE government does not impose income tax, but corporate tax has been introduced and a 5% VAT was set in 2018.

United Arab Emirates is recognized as a region and middle power. UAE is a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, OPEC, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). United Arab Emirates is described as an authoritarian state. According to human rights groups, there are systematic human rights abuses, including torture and enforced disappearances of government critics.
