Info about Uganda (History)

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It borders Kenya to the east, South Sudan to the north, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Rwanda to the southwest, and Tanzania to the south. The southern part of the country includes a significant portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda is located in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda is also located in the Nile Basin and has a varied but generally altered equatorial climate. Its population is over 42 million, of which 8.5 million live in the capital and largest city of Kampala.

Uganda is named after the Kingdom of Buganda, which covers most of the country's south, including the capital, Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1700-2300 years ago, when the Bantu-speaking population migrated to the southern parts of the country.

Beginning in 1894, the territory was under the protectorate of Great Britain, which established administrative law throughout the territory. Uganda gained independence from Great Britain on October 9, 1962. Since then, the period has been marked by violent conflicts, including an eight-year military dictatorship led by Idi Amin.

The official languages are English and Swahili, although “any other language” may be used as a medium of instruction in schools or other educational institutions, or for legislative, administrative or judicial purposes, as may be prescribed by law. ” Luganda, a central region-based language, is widespread in the central and southeastern regions of the country, and several other languages are also spoken, including Lango, Acholi, Runyoro, Runyancole, Rukiga, Luo, and Lusoga.

The current President of Uganda is Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who came to power in January 1986 after a protracted six-year guerrilla war. Following constitutional amendments that lifted the presidential term limits, he was able to run and was elected President of Uganda in the 2011, 2016 and 2021 general elections.
