Paraguay

Paraguay is a country in South America. It borders Argentina in the south and southwest, Brazil in the east and northeast, and Bolivia in the northwest. With a population of 7 million, nearly 3 million live in Asuncion, the capital's largest city, and the surrounding subways. The Spanish conquerors arrived in 1524 and in 1537 founded the city of Asuncion, the first capital of the province of Rio de la Plata. During the 17th century, Paraguay was the missionary center of the Jesuits. There, the native Guarani people converted to Christianity and were introduced to European culture. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territory in 1767, Paraguay became an increasingly surrounding colony, with few urban centers and few settlers. After independence from Spain in the early 19th century, Paraguay was governed by a series of authoritarian governments characterized by nationalist, isolationist, and protected trade-based policies. This period ended with the tragic Paraguayan War (1864–70), during which the country lost half of its prewar population and about 25–33% of its territory to the Triple Alliance of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. In the 20th century, Paraguay faced another major international conflict, the Chaco War (1932–35) against Bolivia. The country was then placed under a series of military dictatorships, culminating in Alfredo Stroessner's 35-year regime, which continued until he was overthrown by an internal military coup in 1989.
