Papua New Guinea is a country of Oceania, consisting of the eastern half of New Guinea and the islands off the coast of Melanesia (the southwestern Pacific region of northern Australia). These societies and clans are clearly recognized by the Papua New Guinea Constitution. The Constitution states that "traditional villages and communities will continue to be viable units of Papua New Guinea society" and protects the continued importance of regional and national community life. The country has been an observer of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since 1976 and has applied for full membership. It is a full member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Pacific Community, and the Pacific Islands Forum.
