Info about Hong Kong (History)

Hong Kong is a Chinese city and special administrative region in the eastern part of the Pearl River Delta in southern China. With more than 7.5 million residents of various nationalities on 1,104 square kilometers (426 square miles) of territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world. Hong Kong is also one of the most developed cities in the world and housing is the most expensive.

Hong Kong was re-established as a colony of the British Empire in 1842 after the Qing Empire took over Hong Kong Island from Xin'an County at the end of the Opium War of 1841. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860. The Second Opium War was further extended in 1898 when Britain acquired a 99-year lease of new territory. Hong Kong, England, was occupied by Empire Japan from 1941 to 1945. After the surrender of Japan, the British government resumed. The entire territory was transferred to China in 1997. As one of China's two special administrative regions (the other is Macau), Hong Kong maintains a separate governance and economic system from mainland China under the principle of "one country, two systems".

Originally a sparsely populated rural and fishing village, the region has become one of the world's most important financial centers and commercial ports. It is the 10th largest exporter in the world and the 9th largest importer. Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterized by low taxation and free trade, and its currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world. Hong Kong has the third highest number of billionaires in any city in the world, the second highest number of billionaires in any city in Asia, and the largest ultra-high-priced individual in any city in the world. .. Although the city is one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, there are serious income inequality among its population.

Hong Kong is a highly developed region and is ranked 4th in the United Nations Human Development Index. The city has the highest number of skyscrapers in any city in the world, and its inhabitants have some of the cities with the longest life expectancy in the world. The dense space led to a developed transportation network with more than 90% of public transport. Hong Kong is ranked 4th in the Global Financial Centers Index.
